The Lands Commission has stated that the Land Act 2020 and its contents will be completely implemented.
Persons working as land guards face a minimum five-year sentence and a maximum 15-year imprisonment under the Act.
Those who use their services in Ghana are likewise breaking the law.
Land guards’ operations have become a stumbling block for many people wanting to buy land, particularly in Accra, Ghana’s capital.
Over 2,000 salt producers in the Central Region, for example, claim to have lost their companies after being attacked by suspected land guards at Dampase in the Gomoa East District over a boundary dispute.
Thousands of Ghana cedis worth of property was damaged in the attack.
If authorities do not heed the salt producers’ concerns, they have warned to fight back.
The new rule, according to James Dadson, Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, will maintain sanity in the land space.
Sponsors of land guards, he claims, will be held accountable as well.
“It is also important to note that if you go and sponsor a land guard or recruit a land guard to engage in any illegality to prevent someone from accessing his or her land, it is an offense and you will be punished with a jail term of not less than five years and not more than 15 years under the Act.”
