Ghanaians Will Praise Us Later For Taking The Country To IMF – Agric Minister

Minister for Agriculture and a member of the Economic Management Team(EMT) Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has said Ghanaians are going to applaud the current NPP administration led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for taking the country to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for help.

“Eventually, Ghanaians are going to praise us that given the situation, we have made such a decision”, Dr. Afriyie Akoto said.

According to Dr. Afriyie Akoto, there are going to be better negotiations with the IMF for the best interest of the country and not to deprive Ghana of proper development plans.

President Akufo-Addo over the week directed the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to begin formal engagements with the International Monetary Fund, for an economic program.
Cabinet at a meeting on June 30th, 2022, supported the government’s decision to pursue an economic program from the Fund.

The IMF has also confirmed Ghana’s request for help and said it would start discussions with authorities in the coming weeks.

However, speaking to Nhyira FM in an exclusive interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the Minister for Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto who is also a member of the country’s Economic Management Team stated categorically that, the government is going to make the interest of the country the first thing on the table during their discussion.

“We are a very prominent Africa member of the IMF. We are not running to some strange stranger somewhere that we are going to beg. And they are there to advise governments. And the president in his wisdom has decided that it is about time we speak to them so we are speaking to them. The most important thing is the terms and conditions we are going to bring”.

After the government’s decision to go to IMF for a program, many have criticized it. A leading member of the NPP Hon Kennedy Agyapong has also said the situation will make it impossible for them to “break the 8” as planned by the party.
