Despite the reasons that soldiers in uniform constantly offer for their acts, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that there are no excuses for military interference in a country’s government.
President Akufo-Addo stated in an interview with Kumasi-based Ash FM on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021, as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region, that Ghana has enjoyed political stability since 1992 because the Ghanaian people have the opportunity to use the ballot box every four years to decide whether to change or keep a government in power.
“Our country’s stability has been aided by the use of the vote box. People feel that if a leader is not performing well, they will be able to vote against him in four years. He stated, “We don’t need a coup to change someone.”
As a result of military coups in Guinea and Mali, President Akufo-Addo announced that ECOWAS has begun evaluating its protocols in order to promote the sub-democratic region’s growth.
“To be honest, I am not speaking (today) as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), but I support the idea… Third-term mandates in any country, in my opinion, should be prohibited by ECOWAS conventions on good governance. I believe that is something we should do to avoid what is occurring in Guinea from happening elsewhere.” he added
“There are various reasons for the military involvement, but there is no justification at any stage,” President Akufo-Addo remarked when asked why the regional bloc stood by while Alpha Conde amended the constitution to extend his tenure.
“We are opposed, in principle, to any military intervention in a country’s political life,” he stated. The people have the ability to solve their problems through the vote box.”
