Volta NDC demands extension of voter registration over blackouts

The voters registration exercise will give persons who were under 18 previously a chance to vote

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region is asking for an extension of the Limited Voter Registration Exercise in the Volta and Oti Regions to make up for delays caused by recent extensive power outages.

Kafui Agbleze, Regional Communications Officer for the Party said in a statement that Power Distribution Services (PDS) Limited confirmed the widespread blackout in a communique, and was enough compelling evidence for the Electoral Commission (EC) to consider an extension of its exercise.

“The communiqué by PDS is a testament to the fact that there were difficulties with the registration exercise in Volta on Tuesday and Wednesday, which is not the doing of those who wish to register.”

“We, therefore, call on Madam Jean Mensah and the Electoral Commission to extend the number of days for the registration exercise in Oti and Volta to make for the hours lost due to the power outages in the region as confirmed by PDS”, he stated.

Power outages were recorded in the two regions on Tuesday, June 18, and lasted well over 24 hours in most areas.

The EC’s Limited Voter Registration Exercise started on Monday, June 17 and would end on July 7, 2019.
