RESIDENTS OF SAKAM COMMUNITY EMBARKS ON SPEED RAMPS DEMONSTRATION

 

Residents of Offinso Sakam has embarked on ‘peaceful’ demonstration on Tuesday, 30, as part of measures to sound their accumulated grievances to the Ghana Highways Authority and the Ministry of Roads and Transport to construct speed ramps on Kumasi to Techiman highways passing through the Sakam community.

The demonstration were led by joints Assembly members of Namon electoral area, Hon. Nimo and the assembly member for Sakam, hon. Agyei Mansah together with some residents numbered in thousand’s with red and black attire and red bands on them.

The demonstration comes on the back of increasing killing of residents and car crashes on the road by speeding vehicles from Kumasi to Techiman highways.

Statistics reveals by the assembly member for the area, hon. Agyei Mensah indicate that, from the beginning of 2019 to the midyear, a total of 8 people have been killed and 7 others sustaining injuries.

It took the intervention of the Offinso police numbered about 10 to calm situation down which latter brought the demonstration to an end.

The assembly member for Sakam-Anyinasiso area , hon Agyei Mansah speaking to Kaakyire Kwasi Afari, a journalist at the area, he lamented that the absence of speed ramps has increased death tolls of residents being knocked down by speeding vehicles making road crossing much challenging for people living In the community.

 

Some participants accounts the risk and how fearful crossing the highway’s has become the easiest route to death in the Sakam community where one has to wait in hours before crossing the road to other end.

They threatened to embark on another demonstration which they termed as “unstoppable demonstration” in 2 weeks if the altmatum given expires without attending to their plea.

As part of the demonstration, the demonstrators blocked the highways for almost minutes causing a huge traffic jam on the road preventing both commercial and private drivers to apply the road.
