Today’s investigations have uncovered that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has beefed up its security detail at various check points along the borders in the Volta Region.

That, Today understands, is, ostensibly, to prevent foreign nationals (Togolese, Beninese and Ivorians) from partaking in the ongoing limited Biometric Voters’ Registration (BVR) exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC).

A visit by Today on Monday, May 1, 2016 to some registration centres close to the borders in the Volta Region showed how the leadership of the NPP had deployed party agents to monitor and also prevent foreigners from crossing over to Ghana to register.

Today observed that since the commencement of the exercise on Thursday, April 28, 2016, some people, believed to be agents of the NPP, are always found at Segbe and Aflao borders, ensuring that no foreigner or whatsoever crosses the border to the Volta Region.

The nationwide registration exercise will end on Sunday, May 8, 2016.

The exercise is to allow Ghanaians who have attained the age of 18 and above and have not registered to register so as to enable them become eligible voters.

And before the exercise began, the Volta regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Amewu, alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was planning to bring in Togolese to register.

Speaking on 3FM’s ‘Sunrise’ Morning Show, Mr. Amewu accused the district chief executive (DCE) for Hohoe Municipality of being the person behind the plot.

He also attributed the NPP’s defeat in 2012 to the EC for using a bloated register.
