Mr. Jonathan Okyere Asante, a political scientist, has commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the enormous progress it has made since the beginning of the Fourth Republic more than two decades ago.
On the occasion of the NDC’s 29th anniversary on Thursday on Power 97.9 FM, Mr. Asante, who has been following the activities of the two major political parties since 1992, declared that the NDC has fared considerably better than the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He told Dwaboase host Kwame Prince Minkah that the NDC’s achievements in Ghana’s political history were immense and immeasurable, noting the drafting of the constitution and the execution of some critical policies that are still relevant to Ghanaians today.
He stated that the NDC has played a significant role in all sectors of the economy, citing Energy, Roads, Infrastructure, Health, and other areas, and that the NPP cannot compare its achievements to those of the NDC.
Mr. Asante pointed out that the NDC made significant investments in the energy industry, particularly in bringing power to most sections of the country under the late JJ Rawlings’ reign.
He decried President Kuffour’s inability to add more megawatts to the country’s power generation capacity, resulting in sporadic power outages that began in 2007 and were passed down to the late Prof JEA Mills’ administration, which took attempts to address the problem.
Concerning infrastructure, Mr Asante stated that multiple roads, cheap housing, and updated interchanges such as Circle interchange, Tema interchange, and Pokuase interchange were built during the presidency of former President John Dramani Mahama to enhance the country’s economic growth.
According to him, the NPP cannot brag about any newly built interchange in the country.
Mr. Asante recognized both parties’ contributions in the health sector, stating that it took the visionary NDC to extend the NPP’s mutual insurance program to the National Health Insurance Plan (NHIS), which became a statewide scheme to address Ghanaians’ health needs.
