Luxury vehicle Tax is a hindrance to our work – DVLA BOSS

Nana Oteatuoso Kokoben II, district manager for Drivers and vehicles licensing authority (DVLA) at Asante – Bekwai in Bekwai municipality of the Ashanti region has said that, the imposition of heavy tax on luxury vehicles by the NPP government is a hindrance to the work of the DVLA.
According to him, there hasn’t been peace between staff of DVLA and Vehicle owners since the introduction of the killer tax by the NPP government.
For the first time in the country’s history, owners of luxury vehicles with engine capacities of 3 litres or more are made to pay an annual tax on their vehicles.
Christened Luxury Vehicle Tax, the government is seeking to raise more revenue by taxing the wealthy a little more.

Vehicles with engine capacities of 3.0 – 3.5 litres are attracting an annual tax of 1,000 Ghana cedis; those with engine capacities of 3.6 – 4.0 litres pay 1,500 cedis annually; while 4.1 litres and above are to an annual tax of 2000 Ghana cedis.Commercial vehicles are, however, exempted from the luxury vehicle tax.

The mid-year budget review deflated anger especially by the Minority who predicted the Finance Minister was going to announce increases in VAT and National Health Insurance Levy.

The steps by the government in positioning such a tax on luxury vehicles has brought major challenge to staff of DVLA and vehicles owners

The DVLA boss then called on the government, led by Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo to change the name of the tax, Christined luxury vehicle tax to Cubic Capacity Levy to avoid the gross misunderstanding that ensue between them and Vehicle owners.
He told the press last Friday that, drivers and vehicle owners always fight them about this luxury levy policy so he thinks if the name be change from luxury vehicle tax to Cubic Capacity levy , it will help solve the gross misconduct towards DVLA staff by vehicle owners .
He said, the Cubic Capacity levy policy will help them know the cost of every vehicle without any constraints and this he believes will help bring sanity at the work place.
