Late former President Mills, was reported to have suffered from throat cancer and died only five months before he was set to seek re-election.

The late former President was succeeded by Vice-President John Dramani Mahama.
But according to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, he was rather “prematurely” killed by the incessant corrupt acts of former President John Mahama.

The NPP firebrand popularly known as Chairman Wontumi in an interview on Wontumi Radio which was carried live on Wontumi TV, revealed that the late Mills regretted picking John Dramani Mahama as his vice after it became clearer that the latter used his office to dupe the state.

Chairman Wontumi explained that the late John Evans Atta Mills became increasingly worried about his vice and that uncontrollable pressure led to his untimely demise.
