Intel Launches Blockchain Chip To Mine Bitcoin And Mint NFTs, Will Be 1000 Times Faster Than Competitors

Intel Corp on Friday announced a new chip for blockchain applications such as Bitcoin mining and minting NFTs to capitalise on the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies.

The chip will be available later this year, with Block Inc, the Jack Dorsey-led company that just changed its name from Square Inc to reflect its expanding focus on blockchain.

According to Intel, the chip is an energy-efficient “accelerator” meant to speed up blockchain tasks that demand massive quantities of computer power and hence burn a lot of energy. Intel said:

we expect that our circuit innovations will deliver a blockchain accelerator that has over 1000x better performance per watt than mainstream GPUs for SHA-256 based mining.
