COVID-19: ”Those In the South Should Stay There…Nobody Should Come To The North” -Travelers Told

According to some reports gathered by Ghanawish.com, the overwhelming numbers of people who are moving to the north of Ghana from the southern part of the country following an impending lockdown in some major towns has raised concerns and outrage from residents in the five regions of the north.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday March 27, 2020 announced that “effective 1 am on Monday, 30th March, some forty-eight hours from now, I have imposed, pursuant to the powers granted the President of the Republic, under the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012), restrictions on movement of persons in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA, which includes Awutu Senya East), and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area and contiguous districts, for a period of two (2) weeks, subject to review. It will give us the opportunity to try to halt the spread of the virus, and scale-up effectively contact tracing of persons who have come into contact with infected persons, test them for the virus, and, if necessary, quarantine and isolate them for treatment, should they prove to have the virus.”

Following the announcement, large numbers of people are reported to be rushing to various transport stations in Accra and Kumasi to catch buses and relocate to the north for the two weeks period.

The mad rush to the north has sparked apprehension and disapproval from many who have said the move has the tendency to further spread the Corona Virus and essentially defeat the purpose of the lockdown.

Some social media users and contributors on radio programs in Bolgatanga expressed outrage, and called for measures to stop the travellers from embarking on their journey to the north.

“I don’t understand what is going on. Do they even understand that the virus moves only when you move?” a contributor who introduced himself as Michael said on Bolgatanga based Yem Radio. Meanwhile, social media users have also been busy waging a strong disapproval of the decision by many to relocate.
