Almost every Ghanaian will agree to the fact that Twi is the most spoken local language in the country.
It is the most popular language in Ghana with a lot of people preferring it to other languages and with about two third of the country’s population speaking it either as a mother tongue or a learnt language.
There are a lot of occasions in which Twi is used as an official language to honor guest and to set the occasion going.
From talk show hosts to radio and sports presenters Twi is preferred, from sports commentary to news presentations it is of no surprise that a lot of people would have preferred it being our official language.
Before we get to know these few countries who speak this traditional language let us learn a little about the culture of this great tribe.
Twi which is also called akan kasa or asantefuo kasa or probably asantesem is the mother tongue of the Ashanti tribe in southern Ghana which is also one of the most powerful in the west African sub region.
Their stable food is fufu ( fofoo or Fufuo) which is a dish made from poinded yam and sometimes cassava and plantain or any one of them.
They boost of a unique material culture in their kente dresses which is hand woven from the finest of threads.
The Ashanti tribes practice the matrilineal system of inheritance which means cousins are mostly lucky to inherit their uncle’s legacies.
Without much Ado let us get to know these few countries who speak apart from Ghana where it is originally from.
1.Ivory Coast Is a neighboring country to Ghana and it is of no surprise to have the French country as one of the Twi speaking countries.
During the transatlantic slave trade, a lot of ashantis we’re taking as slaves and were moved to the Ivory Coast to be sold to French masters.
After independence most of them were freed and thought it wise to just remain and form a sub local tribe group of the Ashantis in the Ivory Coast.
2.Jamaica is a black dominated western country which has most of its citizens as descendants of historical slaves.
A lot of Black Jamaicans trace their descendant to Africa and it is no Suprise Ghana is included.
There is a Twi speaking local sub group in the Jamaica which speaks fluent Twi as that of their forefathers here in Ghana.
3.Benin is just a stone throw away from Ghana and is also one of the countries which has a few Twi speaking citizens among it’s citizens.
A lot of forefathers who traveled around the african country in search of greener pastures and to escape wars settled in northern parts of Benin.
4.Suriname has quite a remarkable bound with African countries in which Ghana hasn’t been an exception.
A lot of Ghanaians were either captured as slaves or were given free citizenship at a time Suriname was still a young and developing country in order to increase its population.
