Arresting Someone For Not Accepting Mobile Money Will Be Abuse Of Power – Ato Forson

It’s been barely four days after the government’s new 1.5% tax which is meant to affect most electronic financial transfers has kick started. The controversial electronic levy popularly known as e-levy has taken full effect since Sunday, May 1, 2022.

The tax although government says is aimed at improving living standards in the country, is posing a bit of challenge to some members of the public. Some sections of the Ghanaian public have started complaining at turn of events after the implementation.

Many are saying that some businesses have begun rejecting electronic payments at their premises to avoid the new 1.5% transaction fee it attracts. A very recent case is that of radio broadcaster Adakabre Frimpong Manso who had earlier narrated an experience he encountered at a fuel station.

He disclosed that he was returning to Accra after a long weekend in the Region when he stopped by a filling station to buy GHC200 of fuel, only to be told by an attendant that their madam has warned them not to accept MoMo.

However, Hon. John Kumah, the Deputy Minister of Finance, in a recent development has warned businesses against their rejection of payments for goods and services through Mobile Money.

This warning however did not go down well with Hon Cassiel Ato Forson.

The honorable (Ato Cassiel) took to his twitter page and tweeted that “Arresting someone merely because they do not accept mobile money will be frivolous. And abuse of power. He added that Mobile Money is not legal Tender but just another medium of exchange.
