Adansi North District: Galamsey pit swallows dozens at Akrokerri (+video

Scores of illegal miners have been swallowed by a galamsey pit that caved in on Thursday, 18 July 2019 at Akrokerri in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti region.

It is unclear the exact number of miners who were in the pit at the time it collapsed, but a lone survivor who struggled to speak after been rescued said they “were many”.

The site where the carnage occurred is right at the centre of town, near a public toilet facility, despite a ban on all forms of illegal mining activities in the country.

The town has been thrown into a state of pandemonium as locals struggle to remove the rubble to rescue the trapped artisanal miners.

Residents of the town say the miners dug the pit in pretense of constructing a manhole to divert choked fecal matter from the public toilet, but sneaked in at night to mine for gold.

There was no state rescue effort at the scene at the time of filing this story, but for the presence of one police office.
