The newly-elected Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic Alban S.K Bagbin has pledged to submit himself to the will of the House.
He’s further pledged to serve Ghana faithfully to the best of his ability.
“I will also conscientiously discharge my duty as Speaker of this Parliament. I want to promise whole-heartedly to put at the disposal of Parliament and this country the store of knowledge, immense experience and the huge databank I’ve accumulated and accommodated over the 28 years I have been a member of this House,” Rt. Hon. Bagbin said in his acceptance speech after he was sworn in as Speaker.
The veteran Legislator Alban Bagbin backed by the NDC caucus in parliament was elected the Speaker for the eighth parliament of the 4th Republic on Thursday Januar7, 2021.
He emerged the winner after garnering 138 votes in a tensed polls conducted in the Chamber.
The incumbent Speaker, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, nominated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the other hand secured 136.
The high stakes election of the Speaker of parliament for the 8th parliament turned chaotic at dawn causing balloting to stall for almost 4 hours.
The process recorded numerous scuffles with the third breakout triggering a bizarre situation where soldiers stormed the chamber to restore order.
